Inhalt

Hans Küng (1928-) and Tu Weiming (1940-) are the leading Western and Eastern symbols respectively of the post-Cold War attempt, reinvigorated after September 11, 2001 and the 2008 global financial crisis, to build a meaningful ethical ecumenicism for a world in urgent need of convergence on a range of moral issues from climate change and nuclear disarmament to economic inequality and territorial justice. Küng and Tu claim that the examples of Jesus and Confucius are necessary but not sufficient for this brave new world faced with the challenge of what primatologist Frans de Waal has called 'globalisation for a tribal species'; each sought to break out of his own civilisational tradition and to embrace the 'best that has been thought in said' in foreign civilisations, culminating, after hundreds of publications and thousands of lectures and interviews, in the founding of sister Global Ethic Institutes at Tübingen and Peking Universities in recent years. This course compares Küng and Tu's ecumenical doctrines and asks what kind of research can build on them to face the challenges of the coming decades without the presence of these pioneering founders.
