Ethical business often has been used as an umbrella term for the various ways, that business “do the right thing”, including timely topics, labeled as corporate sustainability, corporate social responsibility, and social entrepreneurship. Humanistic management may be used to unify these perspectives. In this seminar we will thoroughly analyze the structures and practices underlying these labels with the goal to understand and develop humanistic business models and humane businesses.
In a first step, the concepts of humanistic management and business models will be introduced as analysis frameworks for the following case discussions. In a second step, four case studies of real business will be analyzed and discussed in depth. The cases provided should have been read by all students in advance and will be presented before the in-class discussion by small groups of 3-4 students. In a last step we will apply the particular insights from cases analyzed to synthesize a humanistic reference business model. In the term paper (Hausarbeit) students will be asked to analyze a business model of a real-life company (existing or start-up) and to conceptually re-design it so that it becomes a “better” business.
