Dignity and Business

The role of human rights and human responsibilities

The political consensus in Western societies has long held the protection of human dignity as central to societal progress. The protection of human rights plays a central role in such quests. In business however, human rights are – at best – seen as a side-constraint to strategy. Much less visible are determined efforts of developing higher levels of responsibility.

Business has often proved to be a force for progress and betterment of the quality of life. The Humanistic Management in cooperation with the Humanistic Management Centre, the Global Ethic Institute at the University of Tübingen and Fordham University therefore invite you to examine the conceptual foundations of human dignity in business, as well as the role of human rights and responsibilities on 9-10 October 2014 in Tübingen. Focusing on some of the trail-blazing companies, practitioners will share with us how their practices respect human rights and promote responsibility. Policy makers will point out limitations and progressive approaches in business strategies. In concert with renowned global experts from academia, practice and policy, such as the Fair Wear Foundation, Vaude, United Nations Global Compact, German Institute for Human Rights we will engage in an interactive application-oriented, 2-day collaboration in search of solutions and dissemination of good practices.
